I used to think that courage is somewhat of a rare commodity. But lately, I’ve had the privilege of observing some fearless actions. Maybe I just didn’t notice all the bravery before; perhaps I was seeing through a pair of colored glasses I didn’t know I was wearing.
I am referring to the boldness teenagers must muster to leave home and go off to college, the strength it takes to make a change, or the daring it takes to say what you think, and even more poignantly, the courage to start over after a serious loss.
Courage is often the ability to make a decision. It is equally refreshing to discover that making a decision leads to peace. It’s the indecisiveness that drives you nuts.
And so, as we approach the end of the year, and get ready to launch into the next one, we are in the process of making decisions, becoming a different person than the one we are today. We can evolve into whatever we can imagine for ourselves and it is one of the joys of the holiday season.
The artists go through a version of this mental exercise as they face each new blank canvas. What will they have the nerve to attempt? And when they have completed it, will they have the confidence to show it to thousands of people?
Throughout 2007 hundreds of artists have contributed their artwork to our publication, and each one has my respect. I admire their courage. Peace to you and yours this Christmas and dare to start the year anew!
