Growing up on a family farm in rural Ontario, Canada, provided a perfect opportunity to learn the value of camaraderie, hard work, and a love for animals. Driven by a deep admiration for both horses and art, Jean pursued formal training in equestrian skills at college level, and later, earned her degree at the Ontario College of Art specializing in illustration. Taking commissions for portraiture has also played a big part in Jean's art education. She has learned to achieve striking attitudes with human and animal subjects.
Jean has always found a market for her comical drawing style. Her editorial illustrations and gag cartoons have appeared in many periodical magazines. In 1998 the Livestock Publications Council presented the Paint Horse Journal with an award for an illustrated article sporting Jean's work.
Her ability to execute sensitive realistic drawings and paintings as well as a hilarious cartoon style, gives Jean Abernethy's work a unique versatility.
