THE ARTIST'S HORSE AS MUSE

Diana Allison

Charm had been a part of my life for 8 years now. My husband and I bought her from a woman who had “rescued” her at auction in New Mexico. We had interest in her because of her Iberian build and beautiful movement. Other than that Charm was not an easy horse to get to know, nor did she have any interest in ever becoming a human companion. The day we picked her up we spent over an hour trying to catch her in a muddy pen . . . she sure proved herself to be quite agile! We have tried to research where this mare could have come from. Our only evidence is the large cattle brand on her left shoulder.

My husband broke Charm to ride and she was doing wonderfully . . . although she remained stand-offish and hard to catch. We used her as our guide horse for a while back in the days when we led trail rides. She was a delight to ride with her smooth gaits.

One year we participated in a Horse Drive and took Charm along with us. At the conclusion of the drive, Charm was hauled back to our friend’s pasture. On her trip home, the trailer door flew open and she tumbled out with two other horses falling on top of her. We received a call from our friends about the tragedy; Charm was alive but barely moving around with a broken pelvis. Miraculously she pulled through and surprisingly gave birth to her first colt late that summer. Since then she has had a second foal and is now pregnant with her third out of an andalusian.

Charm’s accident has scarred her trust with people and has proven a difficult relationship for me. These past few months I have been spending time with her daily and am now starting to feel a special bond with her, and now she is willingly caught. I have always admired this mare’s beauty and look forward to seeing her new foal this Spring.

Charm has traveled many rough roads in her life and she has the scars to show it. BUT she will always have a place in my heart . . .
