I grew up your typical horse-crazy girl. My best friend, Leslie, and I fed each others' obsession. We whinnied instead of talked, tied ropes to our bicycle handles for reins, and collected what seemed like thousands of plastic horses.
After hounding my parents relentlessly for 12 years, Scout came into my life. I was on cloud nine – finally a horse of my own! Although not always the best behaved horse around, I loved him dearly. We marched in local parades and won ribbons in 4-H shows. He was my teenage confidant and dear friend.
When my parents retired they built him a beautiful barn, and he spent his last years with a couple of pasture buddies living like the king I thought he was! He died in November of 1998 at 34 years old. We spent 28 years together, and I still miss him – his halter still hangs on my bedpost and a lock of tail hair decorates the bulletin board in my studio.
I will never forget you, baby. You brought beauty and joy into my life that I will never forget. The tears still come as I write this...missing you!!!
