I still ask Santa for a pony every year, and remain hopeful that one day he will oblige. But in the meanwhile, I satisfy myself with regular visits to others’ barns. Always with camera in tow, I actively seek out passages, bits of unadulterated beauty, in each animal. It is there – sometimes I have to look a little harder, sometimes it smacks me in the face – but it is always there. The solidity of a chestnut hip as the sun slips across a warm back. The sinuous edge a blaze traces down a dished roman nose. Or, like with this gelding, the symphony in blues found between his eyes and wavy mane.
