Above all members of the equine species, it’s the sport horses that inspire me the most. Whether galloping cross country during a horse trials, jumping enormous fences in an arena or performing graceful dressage movements, their beauty, power and noble bearing always inspire enough ideas for paintings to last three lifetimes.
The image of the horse and rider and some background elements in “Almost Home, Hunter Pace” were provided with permission by Metamora Photography, but the rest is straight from my own imagination. I have never been on a fox hunt, and it’s a sure thing that I never will be. But I can imagine the thrill and excitement of the horses, riders and hounds on a fine fall day and put those imaginings into a painting and create my own vicarious experience.
That’s the beauty of being an artist. We can tap our own imaginations, create our own worlds and live in them during the creative process. If afterward, the artwork inspires some of you to imagine yourselves in those worlds too, then all the better.
Can you hear the hounds?
