Equestrian Artist Katrina Mcdowell
A native of North Alabama, Katrina Robbins grew up on the banks of the Tennessee River, riding and drawing horses. Over the years these passions have grown into professions. Katrina has attended the Rhode Island School of Design and the Memphis College of Art. In addition, Katrina apprenticed as a portrait painter under Constance Erickson of Franklin, Tennessee (who studied under Daniel Greene at the Art Student's League of New York). Since 1993, Katrina has been painting portraits professionally by independent commission. While oils are her preferred medium, she also enjoys doing pencil sketches on colored paper. Although she has always owned Quarter Horses, Katrina's equine artwork is as eclectic as her training history, including English and Western, Thoroughbreds and Arabians. Her work has been featured on the cover of The Chronicle of the Horse, and in Bliss magazine. Katrina and her two sons currently reside in Tuscumbia, Alabama, where she continues to paint and train horses.
"I aspire for my paintings of horses to be a testament to their beauty, strength, and majesty, and of the love that I have always had for them. There is a Longfellow quote that moves me, which particularily inspired the painting of my horse, Joa-bim:
"He speaketh not, and yet there lies A conversation in his eyes"
Through the mute medium of art, I hope to preserve timeless moments of silent conversations with horses."
