Equestrian Artist Sharon Simons-Passmore

SHARON SIMONS-PASSMORE, originally from Chicago and currently residing in East Tennessee, studied art at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Summers during those years were spent at Chicago’s Arlington Park Race Track where she worked as a pony girl. A favorite filly inspired Sharon to do her first pastel equine portrait. Encouraged by her commercial art teacher in Arizona and various members of the racing press in Chicago, Sharon began a career of drawing equine portraits in pastel, charcoal, and pencil.

Among her clientele over the years were J. Willard Marriott, Sr., founder of the Marriott Corporation; B.J. Ridder, Chairman of the Board of Knight-Ridder Publications; and Louis Rowan, past president of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association.

Work and marriage took Sharon away from her art for a number of years, but in 1999, she returned to the easel with a newfound passion. While she has not had the time to partake in juried art shows, she says her award is the look of joy on a customer’s face when she presents a finished portrait. Her works not only capture a horse’s personality, but they also exhibit genuine knowledge of equine anatomy.

In addition to accepting commission work, Sharon is brushing up her skills by sketching everything from neighbor’s children to the young calves on her farm and working to expand into oil painting.
