Equestrian Artist Susan N. Sweet

Horses have been the dominant part of my life since I was a toddler. I was fortunate to grow up on a small mixed farm in rural Nova Scotia where I could indulge in the joy of sharing my space with various horses and ponies. I belonged to the local branch of the Canadian Pony Club, participated in horse shows in Nova Scotia, evented, and rode the fields and dykelands of our home. My last two equines were Hackney ponies and we competed in fine harness and roadster classes at local horse shows. Although I became "horseless" six years ago, I view that as a temporary situation.

I attended the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design from 1986 to 1990. I had always been driven to draw and paint from childhood, and of course, the subject matter was generally horses, but the education I was exposed to in the art college environment enriched my desire to work in the arts. Drawing, painting, printmaking, photography have been my primary concerns. The horse in some form continued to show up in my work, and I incorporate the tack, equipment, even the toys and horsey stuff in many of my paintings.

After graduating in 1990, while working assorted part time jobs, I started a small business called Animal Art. I use wood from our family woodlot to product hand-made jewelry and small home decor items in animal shapes. They are hand-painted and often custom ordered. I also make custom drawings and paintings of horses, and other pets. My usual mediums are chalk pastel on paper or oil on canvas.
