The Making of "Camelot"
After studying a package of pictures from the client, I chose three
reference photos to make digital sketches from. I find greens and blues go well with chestnuts,
so for background options I scanned a blue rock with reddish-brown (chestnut) streaks which would pick up the
horse colour, and pictures of sky
and stone wall with vines, from my extensive photo files. The three backgrounds could have been switched around
so that, for example, the sky was with the front image etc. The client chose the blue rock with the
quater turn pose, but wanted more flowing mane like in the front view, and more neck showing. Using digital brushes much
like I would traditional ones, I added more neck detail, the mane, and made other changes to make the
digital version. With email, it's easy to send JPG sketches; when the digital version was approved, I transferred
it with black pastel to a Gessoed board. After fifty hours of painting over two weeks, I scanned the finished piece
for the customer to examine. She was delighted, so off it went to it's new home.
