Bonnie’s First Blue was suggested by a snapshot I took at the Draft Horse Classic when Ron Martinson was trying with limited success to hold back his Clydesdale x Standardbred mare Bonnie with his elbow and stud chain. I happened to catch their legs at the same angle, and that pose begged to be a sculpture.

Reference photo for Bonnie’s First Blue

This photo shows the platform I cut out of the base to be able to stand Ron on another board supported by the wire rising from the top of his hat. It also shows the twisted wire armature supporting Bonnie’s right hind and the pipe armature entering her side, as well as the jeweler’s wax halter and lead shank and the jewelry chain that became the stud chain.
