Thank you for your interest in a sculptural commission of your horse. Creating a sculpture, be it bronze, Polyform, or resin, is a time consuming process lasting 2-3 months. In addition the foundry takes 6-8 weeks to cast a bronze or resin. I prefer to work from my own reference photographs which helps capture the personality of the subject, but I realize that is not always possible. Therefore, I can work from the client’s snapshots (and hopefully video for movement) or professional photographs if the client can warrant that he/she owns the copyright or has obtained permission in writing from the copyright owner for the use of photographs in creation of the portrait. All reference material will be returned upon completion of the portrait. I also provide the client with a measurement chart to fill in to provide me with accurate proportions.

Terms
Non-Refundable payments: are due and payable by check (with driver’s license and phone numbers) or money order as follows. Shipping and handling are extra and due with notice of receipt in satisfactory condition by the client.
- Bronze:
- 1/3 down-payment remitted with Signed Contract
- 1/3 upon approval of photos and rough draft of sculpture
- 1/3 upon approval of photos of foundry ready finished clay
Artist will inform client of foundry’s expected completion date. Since it takes 3-4 days for artist to complete trip to foundry and supervise finish work on metal and patination, and an additional few days to have piece professionally photographed, the client should anticipate about a week before shipment.
- Polyform: Down payment of 1/2 of the price of the sculpture to be remitted with signed contract. 1/2 upon approval of photos of finished clay, before final baking and painting. Piece will be completed upon receipt of balance due and shipped as soon as the finish is thoroughly dry. Price of "Clear Case" and shipping/handling due before shipment.
- Resin:Polyform sculpture can be reproduced in resin, either as one-of-a-kind or as part of a limited edition. Since this entails shipping the polyform original to have the mold and castings made, these additional costs will be the responsibility of the buyer.
Down-payment of ½ of the price of sculpture to be remitted with signed contract.
Balance due upon shipment of original to the foundry for casting.
Price of “Clear Case” and shipping/handling due before shipment
Timeline: It usually takes about 2 weeks to complete a rough clay sketch of the horse which is then photographed and sent to client for approval. Turnaround time can be shortened if pictures can be e-mailed. Depending on the complexity of the pose and the presence or absence of a rider, completion of the clay can be expected to take up to 3 months. For bronze or resin the 6-8 week foundry time must be added, and for Polyform completion of the baking and painting should take under two weeks.
Pricing: Most of my Bronzes are in the 8" to 10" or 12" to 14" tall (without base) range, and my price estimates reflect having those sizes cast. Of course I can get quotes from the foundry for casting larger pieces, including life-size or monumental, and estimate my prices accordingly. Price will vary depending if the piece is to be a one-of-a-kind or the first casting of a limited edition which allows me to divide the expenses among more castings. Addition of rider/handler, complex tack or other animals all add to the cost and time involved. Straight forward, single horse, 8" to 10" pieces start at $3,000 for a limited edition, single horse 12" to 14" pieces start at $3,500 for limited edition, and prices go up from there depending on complexity and size. Adding rider or other animal starts at $750. You can expect cost to at least double for one-of-a-kind. Prices include standard 1" walnut base and brass nameplate. Special bases can be made by Valley Bronze at Client’s expense. Shipping and handling are at Client’s expense.
Polyform pieces are one-of-a-kind and smaller because of their fragile nature. They usually are no more than about 7" tall. They start at $500, and price again varies with complexity. An aircraft grade plexiglass cover and oak or walnut base (Clear Case by Hotchkiss) is available at cost to accompany the piece. I special order these bases for each sculpture. These pieces can be cast in Resin for considerably less than a comparable piece would cost in bronze. The price would reflect the added expense of shipping/handling the original to the foundry, casting cost, and shipping the completed resin to the customer. I would be happy to discuss these options at length with you.
Exhibition: Since I regularly exhibit my work in juried competitions and advertize in trade magazines, I reserve the right to use slides of each piece when advertizing my work. Client’s name would only be used with his/her permission. If I enter slides of said piece in such competitions and it is juried in, I could request the loan of the piece for major shows for two years following casting unless such permission is expressly denied by the client in the contract. Of course I would bear all shipping and insurance expenses for such loans.
When Ordering: Note any changes in standard contract in writing and initial. Be sure to include all photographs, measurements, down-payment, and both signed copies of contract to expedite meeting your deadline for completion
Thank you for the Honor of creating an image of your beloved equine.
