“Dancing Morgans” portrays Carole Mercer sidepassing her lovely black Morgan mares Valentine and Bobby during her musical ride and drive performed to “The Beautiful Blue Danube”. She and her mares truly dance! You can learn more about her performance by visiting her website at www.carts-carriages.com.

Since Carole originally wanted her mares cast in resin without a base and with the ability to lift her and her saddle off of Bobby as well, I made pipe and flange supports for each rather than the usual fixed pipe armature. These pictures show how I roughed in each leg free of the body and then buried the wire in the shoulder and how I laid each mare on her back in the cradle to work underneath.

“Dancing Morgans” in the clay ready to go to the foundry. I left the shanks of the Pelham bits off so they could be fabricated at the foundry and supported Valentine’s hoof for the trip.

The still hot, freshly welded Carole on Bobby is lying beside the sprue tree from which it had been removed. The next image shows both mares welded onto their respective bases and weld marks ground down to fine finish.

Dennis applied the silver to Bobby’s breast collar after putting low tack tape around edges to protect completed black patina. After each of the “Dancing Morgans” was mounted on the base, Dennis was able to crimp the reins at Valentine’s bit and trim them to the proper length.
