Rhapsody and her Finale is a One of a Kind Super Sculpey (polyform) piece done as a commission. Rhapsody's tail is curved so that Finale's hind legs nest under it while her forelegs rest over Rhapsody's tail and left behind. Finale can also be placed by Rhapsody's forelegs. This was my first piece with the ability to change the horses' positions, and I plan to do another pair laying down. In fact, Hey, Mom! started out to be that piece before she decided she wanted to stand proudly.

Rhapsody and Finale was actually my first Equine Madonna even though I had not embarked on creating a series at that time. In figuring out how to portray the mare and filly lying together as the client requested using the reference photo she took over the mare’s shoulder as the foal was actually being born, I decided to have the filly lying with her hind legs under her mother’s tail and over one of her legs.

This is an early view of mare and filly in what I would call a gesture sketch. Much of the wire inside the Polyform Super Sculpey is not only still visible, but it has not even been trimmed. Since I was working each figure separately, this is the stage where it occurred to me to leave them separate. |
Rhapsody and Finale nearly complete in the position dictated by the client.
